Forgot to answer this one question specifically: we can't because mplayer's codebase is honestly a piece of crap ("it doesn't compile under gcc-2.96/3.0, so let's blame the gcc-people") and because their backend is totally different from ours. We use external libraries (like avifile) as much as possible but since mplayer isn't a library in any form, so we can't use it. We'd appreciate all their help, but we'd rather write clean code then spend hours trying to understand their code, rewrite it to look good, rewrite it again to work with out backend, etc... That's just not a good idea. It's much easier to use avifile for that (which is what we currently do).
