that's exactly what gstreamer's core is! But I'm not expecting the
mplayer/cinelerra/xine developpers to stop developping. But they need to
convert their whole application over from their own backend to our
backend, and that takes long. Probably, they don't want to.

The gstreamer core is moe than flexible enough for whatever needs.

Has there ever been cooperation? Why did we have OMS vs. Xine? Why do we
have about ten million multimedia players nowadays, each supporting
mostly one format? Why does cinelerra need its own GUI toolkit? Why are
there at least 20 v4l-recording apps, most functioning only half or not
at all - and why are they all commandline-based? If I knew the answer to
all these questions...

Most people just don't cooperate, for any unknown reason. Let it be,
make sure at least the people who *are* interested in cooperation get
together and combine efforts. But it's opensource, we can't force
everyone. Gstreamer has a group of people working on a recorder, player,
editor etc, each of these people is willing to give up the one minute of
fame for his 1-man-project for a greater good - getting *real* good
applications for linux to make linux a true multimedia platform.
