They hardly enhanced the v4l2 API, they just added a few device-specific
ioctls to setup a overlay / alpha bleeding / ...

I'd say they are doing their own thing.  I've never heared of them
before.  Beside that the new ioctls they added do not belong into v4l2.
That's a job for X11 (Xvideo) or the framebuffer driver (and the fbdev
folks are thinking about video overlay support).
