The bcast people doing something wrong then.  The mixer isn't required.
Using the video4linux API for audio control has exactly the same effect,
the mixer device is just a second interface to the volume/bass/treble
settings to allow the usage of any random mixer utility.  xawtv should
have no problems to adjust the volume without tvmixer.

/me, althrouth I just noticed that it doesn't work on 2.4.0-test7.  It
works fine on 2.2.15 patched with a half-year-old cvs checkout of the
i2c code.  Looks like I have to debug it...
