Huh?  It's new to me that you can specify the volume in the config ...

xawtv will use the v4l device for volume control.  You can do that
also on the command line using v4lctl.  That may or may not work, not
all hardware has volume control support.  And it may not work for all
inputs.

It is also possible to configure xawtv to use a oss mixer device
(usually the sound card) instead to control the volume.
