Is a graphics board needed with WinTV?

To be more precise: we have purchased a Hauppauge WinTV-GO, and on the box it says that an advanced graphics board compatible with DirectDraw is necessary.

The TV board is now installed and working in a PC with an NVidia Riva Ultra 64. But we would like to do video captures with an unattended, minimal PC without keyboard, screen, or graphics board.

What is the role of the graphics board with the WinTV-GO? If we remove the Nvidia, I realize xawtv and other playback software will no longer work, but would video captures with, say, FFMPEG, still work?
