Not reproducable here.  "xawtv -v 1" should make print xawtv what it
is doing.  Might also be WindowManager related, does it happen with
another WM too?

xawtv and motv are trying to maintain 4:3 by default, can be disabled
in the config file through.  motv also has a menu for that, so you can
toggle it at runtime too.
