The freezing problem depends on the depth in XF86Config-v4. That is, 16
(used by KNOPPIX) works but 24  leads to a freez in overlay mode as you
describe it (with both drivers Nvidia's and XFree's). Maybe it's a problem
with the Xserver (get an mtrr error after shutdown of the Xserver), maybe
not? The hardware should be okay since I experience no problems under XP.
