I have the Sony DVR-PC9 which has a similar setup. I have never used the USB for anything other than mounting the memory card with the  usb-storage module. I have had limited success connecting the camera via S-video to a PCI video capture card (Hauppage WinTV PVR-250) and capturing the video output.
