I tried us-cable-hrc (which I know is wrong because my old VCR doesn't
work set to HRC) and it goes too far in the other direction (strange, I
know); practically all the stations have no color unless fine-tuned
positively.

I closely examined my card just now.  It is definitely the M168T + NE41S;
the picture in the gallery matches and that's what it says on the card.
The tuner cover has PHILIPS stamped out on it, and the upside-down sticker
beneath the AVerMedia AVerTV sticker says this:

3139 147 13251A#
FI1236 Mk2/PH hm
SV23 0216
MADE IN SINGAPORE

I'm not 100% sure on the SV23, it might instead be SW23.

So, which tuner do I have? It doesn't exactly match any of the #define's
in tuner.h, and the closest textually, TUNER_PHILIPS_FM1216ME_MK3 38,
gives only six channels even with scantv -a.

BTW, Is the following the right pattern for testing tuner values using
bttv-0.7.97? Or do I need something else to truly change the tuner?

# insmod bttv tuner=X
# xawtv
... change channels or quickly turn down speakers ...
# rmmod bttv
