I'm convinced the es1371 driver has some issues - i experienced a similar problem. I had to load es1371.o before bttv, and then sometimes the es1371 driver wouldn't work properly, it would just quit. I'd have to unload es1371 and tvmixer, then load es1371 and tvmixer. if i loaded es1371 with tvmixer loaded, it didn't work right. My problems went away when i switched to alsa 0.9 drivers - Eric
