many os's probe the usb controller and echo their findings to the boot
log.
as for function devices, usually their release notes report their
capability set. if not, the web site for individual vendors should have
that info.

one more bit of usb trivia, usb 2.0 are backward compatible and
will slow down to the 1.1 bus rate. a host usb controller that is
2.0 compliant will support a function device mix of low, full, and
high speed usb widgets.
