bttv, audio and modular technolgies m205 pctv

Hi,
Can somebody tell me what I am missing here:

I have a modtech m205, have installed bttv (0.7.90), card=23 and get
excellant video (xawtv), however audio has so far defeated me entirely.

I have loaded btaudio (with virtually every combination of options)
I see the dsp1 and mixer1 devices being registered
if I use smix -d /dev/mixer1 I get a 3 channel mixer
device when analog is selected ,
I have tried selecting all recording sources/levels
and then try to use sox to transfer audio from dsp1 to either dsp
(to listen directly) or to wav file for later listening.
I once had a high pitched wistle, every other occasionn has been
totally silent :-(
In the logs I do see 'recording started' and recording stopped' when
I start/sop sox.

sound works well for other apps
sound.o compiled into kernel,
cs4232.o loaded as module

system is a heavily evolved SuSE 6.2
kernel 2.4.17
350 Mhz PII
192 Megs Mem

I was going to attach logs and screen dumps - but thought I would ask
whats actually wanted first

TIA

(not really a Newbie - but still with lots to learn)
