Acxtrually, you can use syncfb with Xfree86. Then syncfb doesn't touch the resolution / framerate, but just flips images from offscreen memory at vsync, but with full scaling and uyv conversion acceleration. Maybe there is something about how syncfb is used in mplayer that prevents this mode of operation?
