This is correct behaviour when you haven't tuned in
to a tv channel.

On C-Vid or S-Vid the screen should be blue when no signal.
Does it on your setup ?
These inputs on bt878 are very generic, so you probably
used some wrong module options.

The card should be autodetected without any options.
Try:
- rmmod bttv; insmod bttv bttv_gpio=1
- anyway send "dmesg" output filtered for "bttv" and "tuner"
