3) Debug tuner.c:
  For the tuner=3 there is special code in tuner.c:
   case TUNER_PHILIPS_SECAM
  which should follow your tv standard selection in xawtv.
  Add printks to see if it triggers.

I am now fairly sure it is not a tuner thing. I have not checked it on a "windy" box (my will is fighting the idea of having to use braindead software to debug), *BUT* a SECAM signal (in fact taken from the SCART of my telly with SCART->S-video adaptor) on the s-video input exhibits the same behaviour. Green/purple image, for those that have forgotten :-).

I'm plugging away.
