ATI TV Wonder locks up machine on modrpobe...

The machine locks up hard when I do "modprobe bttv ..." with any arguments
any version, any kernel. When I say hard, it is on a LAN, and does not answer to ping. There are no messages of any kind.

tried stock redhat 7.3 kernel. then tried upgrading to the latest and greatest everything
(2.4.19, v4l2, bttv-0.8.45) no change.

The card is an "ATI TV Wonder" and has the following stuff:

       -- Conexant Fusion 878A E197817-1 chip.
       -- Phillips NTSC tuner.
       -- Micronas MSP3445G 88 1162JS LHX chip.

At first there was IRQ sharing. Fixed that, there is none now.

Have tried various options for the driver... most glorious being
something like:

options bttv card=63 tuner=2 triton1=1 vsfx=1 no_overlay=1 irq_debug=2 bttv_debug=1

The machine contains an AGP 4X Matrox G400 display card,
and SBLive OEM version card, and a 3Com 905B 100 BaseT.

To check for card conflicts I removed the sound and network cards,
and reproduced the problem exactly. so I set the BIOS to halt on "no
errors" installed the ethernet card, and removed the display adaptor.

no change, so it does not look like a conflict with another card, but
instead something to do with the ASUS motherboard?

I do not have a machine readily available to act as a serial console.
I have tried building a kernel with the SGI kdb, but that kernel does not boot.

Ideas?

Here is a dump of /proc/PCI...
