Fixed!

just in case this fix is of interest...

I tried the card in another linux box and it worked fine (but this is a server and couldn't be used as permanent fix).

I tried various different graphics cards and the last one (see below) worked fine --except no sound until I uncommented Roland's tvmixer /etc/modules.conf entries.

Morale of the story: if it freezes, try a different graphics card --maybe this could be mentioned in a trouble shooting section in the bttv mini howto?

/proc/pci for AGP ATI graphics card:
VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X (rev 92).
      IRQ 11.
      Master Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=8.
      Prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe6000000 [0xe6ffffff].
      I/O at 0xc800 [0xc8ff].
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xefeff000 [0xefefffff].

Thanks for all your help --your discussions lead me in the right direction... thanks :)

Mark
