  FWIW, I have a prediction-based lossless compressor (huffyuv-style) in
my (incomplete) v4l recording app 'reetpvr'.  Check out the
diffcomp.[c,h] files in CVS at www.sf.net/projects/reetpvr/ if you have
any thoughts on better compression, optimizing the code, or want to
standardize on a fourcc for it or something.

  I can happily record full 720x480 using reetpvr without dropping
frames of video or audio using 'reetpvr'.  I have a P3-733 and a
bttv-compatible card.
