I was getting inconsistent results with a PV951 board until I figured out
that the PIC on the board is seriously confused until you plug the IR
receiver thing into the card, with it connected it consistently works.

The tvaudio module should echo something like below to the kernel
ring buffer ( /bin/dmesg ) when it is inserted:

bttv0: i2c attach [pic16c54 (PV951)]
i2c-core.o: client [pic16c54 (PV951)] registered to adapter [bt848
#0](pos. 1).
