In my opinion, the best choice would be a Philips camera. The old
ones (PCVC680/690) are ok - but they come with CMOS sensors, so the image
quality isn't extraordinary. The new ones though, from the ToUCam series
(especialy the Pro version) are great, they have a CCD sensor and support
640x480 for capturing. There is very good support for these in Linux,
check out http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ for more details.
They also come with good prices - about 80$ for the ToUCam Pro
(although it may vary, depending on country) and only 60$ for the ToUCam
Fun. Beware of the ToUCam XS though, it is not made by Philips and it is
_not_ supported in Linux, although it is pretty cheap and offers a good
image quality.

As a side-note, I have two Philips cams at the moment, one of them
working non-stop for motion-detection, and I am very happy with them.

With best regards,
