It's very much overhead to fork off a programm every time and copy stuff
throuth pipes.  Especially if you are talking about video and multiple
MB/s data rates.  Guess why people don't do video editing with shell
scripts?

ObLibrary:  People who downloaded a fresh xawtv version recently might
have noticed the new libng subdirectory where I've started to separate
out my capture/conversion code...
