I have two systems, one with debian linux
installed on it which I'll call debian and
the other has redhat. On redhat, I don't
have a dedicated motherboard and keyboard
and I connect to a vncserver on in to do
all my work on it. The debian system has
a tv tuner card and xawtv installed on it.
At some point I had vnced to redhat from a
nearby windoze box and loaded a xterm. On
the xterm I executed the command 'ssh -X debian'
and then ran 'xawtv &' in the ssh session.
I expected xawtv to complain that there was
no Xvideo support and it only could run in
the mode of grabdisplay. What actually
happened was I got a black window on redhat
in the vncserver and on my debian box I saw
the tv channel being display even on top of the
screen saver. It said it was running as
overlay and as soon as I turned it to
grabdisplay, the video on debian disappeared
and redhat show the video in the window at
a slow rate as expected. Every other app
like gtv, xine, mplayer always complains
that no Xvideo support is in the server and
refuses to run. How is xawtv able to contact
the X server on debian for Xvideo and the X
server on redhat for events while others can't?
If I move the window on redhat, the video on
debian moves with it.

And is this related to how xawtv can only
display in the primary screen of a multi-head
system and is there a way to change that to
secondary so I can focus on my work in the
primary screen instead?

I sense much NT in you.
NT leads to Bluescreen.
Bluescreen leads to downtime.
Downtime leads to suffering.
NT is the path to the darkside.
Powerful Unix is.
