Likely. The Bt8x8 cards can - for example - draw two fields to different
buffers (so if your capture size + overlay are both only one field, it
will do both), but if one needs both fields, the other is turned off.
That's logical, you can't grab a frame twice, and emulation of these
doesn't belong in the kernel, you'd need some emulation stuff in your
application to handle that (ugly!).

No, v4l2 is an interface, not a backend.
