Title: Streaming Video

Hello,

for remote observation of scientific experiments, we are considering to set up a research project.
On the acquisition side, we have a NTSC Video input and a widely varying dataflow, but on average around 100 Kbps.

We are very much interested in the video4linux and xawtv approach.
So we need to (simulatneously)
* acquire Video NTSC data and scientific data.
* save all data on disk, by preference in a lossless compressed way as we want a maximal recording time
* display selected video data on a S-video output (without windows)
* stream all data (video in m-jepg) with acquisition data on a UDP multi-cast socket

So my question is if we can find suggestions:
* what to read to understand better the video4linux structure
* what PC (I.e P4 2,5 GHz - RDRAM) will have the best performance and stability
* which video capturing board will provide the best performance and drivers
* what would be the optimal recording format for video and what performance we can expect
* are video4linux driver and xawtv sufficient for doing first experiments, or do we need more stuff
* if overlay mode possible while recording

Thank you for the information.
