Steve Davies just told be that it works for him and the reason is that I
only tried to capture to avi, whereas he used mpeg1video, which seems to be
much more "robust". So, playing a file that's written _does_ works with
mpeg, but not with avi.

I tried encoding and time shifted playing an avi file with mplayer
yesterday and had some problems (file IO errors). That may explain
why... ;-) I'm going to check with mpeg1video later.
