Silly question, but did you upgrade your compiler in the meantime?
I found that a module compiled using gcc 3.1 would lock up my machine hard
when insmod'ed onto a kernel compiled using 2.96. All this disappeared
when I rebuilt a new kernel and module using the 3.1 compiler. This was
for saa7134 incidentally.

Compiler version mismatch was something I didn't expect (since it's not
C++ code).
