This is one seriously troubled device... or the USB stack can't figure out
the correct length of the string.

This is at least -not- an IBM PC (Xirlink) chipset.

My advice is to return the camera to the store (if you can) and get
instead a fully supported camera. This will save you a lot of trouble. You
