You can apparently tell by the serial and part number. However, you did say that you've determined that it's a quickcam express. You can find drivers for it at http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/.
These are the drivers I was initially using that locked my box up. At this point I don't recall specifically what caused it to lock up, but I think it was insmoding the drivers. I've since moved it to another box that is less critical and am making another effort. At this point I get a message as follows when I insmod usb-ohci:
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x46d/0x870) is not claimed by any active driver
Which is okay thus far, but /proc/bus/usb is empty. I would have expected to find something there by now. I'll have to recompile the driver for this new box, since the binary from my previous attempt pukes with errors with unresolved symbols errors... Probably because the previous box used the usb-uhci module whereas this one uses the usb-ohci module.
Also, a decent list of
Logitech cams and drivers available at http://qce-ga.sourceforge.net/bio.html . If you want to hack together something that deals with the compression the camera uses (so you can get higher frame rates and image sizes) some guy has reverse engineered the Quickcam Web at http://www.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de/~delwi/quickcam/ .
Hmm, wasn't planning on doing any coding just yet, figured I'd try and use what's available.
It should also be noted that firewire at 400 mbps transfers some serious data, and that firewire 2.0 due sometime is spec'ed at 800 mbps.
Yeah, that's my next effort, to get my sony firewire enabled camcorder talking to my box...
