Re: USB based video/audio capture?

Hello Soren,

I've spent some time on the USB capture of NTSC and CCIR (B/W PAL). The goal has been to capture approx. 640 x 480, but not necessarily at video rate. Most of the devices were tested primarily on Windows. The Linux tests only got as far as using an embedded P3-500 board with an on-board saa7146 capture device (which worked very well, by the way, but was *not* USB). The customer decided to go with the embedded board, and Windows for the time being, so the USB project was put on hold.

Anyway, here is the information:

Lifeview Capview (OV511+) USB:
    http://www.lifeview.com/Sales/Catalog/catalog.html
    http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/

A video capture device with Composite and S-Video input.

This device worked well in Win98 (laptop), but not at all in Win2K. Later analysis suggested that DirectX 8.1 was required, but was not installed by the application. I had hoped to test this device under Linux, since it was 'supported' by the OV511+ driver, but did not do so.

Currently, it appears as if the company is no longer marketing the 'Capview' product...

Microbus MAT961 EBX w/SAA7146 PCI:
    http://www.embedded-pc.com
    http://www.mihu.de/linux/saa7146/index.html

An embedded PC board with an on-board Philips SAA7146/SAA7111 capture system (PCI). This works well in all Windows OS. Tested with Linux (2.2.19, Debian). Worked OK with CCIR, but capture of NTSC (color), while basically working seemed to cause some strange kernel behavior.

Belkin VideoBus II (?) USB:
    http://www.belkin.com [F5U208]
    <no Linux support known>

A USB "cable" with a dongle for attaching Composite, S-Video and Audio.

The device did not work reliably with Win2K, and was only able to capture at 320x240 maximum resolution.

Hauppauge! WinTV (Bt858) USB:
    http://www.hauppauge.com/html/products.htm#usb
    http://www.hauppauge.com/html/wintvpvrusb_datasheet.htm
    http://bytesex.org/bttv/
    http://pvr.sourceforge.net/

A USB dongle for attaching S-Video, (composite with adapter), RF and Audio.

The device worked well in Win2K, but not at full video rate (640x480). Probably, their PVR product (which compresses the video stream before transmitting onto the USB) is the way to go. The pvr project on sourceforge is leading this.
