xawtv on RH73 with ATI AIW 128 Pro video fails; how to configure and/or fix?

I have RH 7.3 intalled on a P4 system with ATI All-In-Wonder 128 Pro (Rage 128) video.

The system appears to be working fine BUT I can not get xawtv to work.
Is there some additional v4l (video4linux) configuration required.
I've seen reference to the GATOS site (which I checked out)
but I've also seen postings implying the GATOS functionality is now
included in XFree86 4.2.0 and that xawtv is running "out of the box" with this video.

Does this work out of the box?
Does anyone have it running?
What am I missing and/or doing wrong here?
What is the minimum changes required to a "stock" RH 7.3 to get this working (that is, I want to configure, add a package or two, but don't want to have to build the kernal and XFree86 from scratch)

When I run xawtv I get the following message:

# xawtv
This is xawtv-3.73, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.18-3)

v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device

but XVideo is running as indicated by
