I see.  OK, using -srate 32000 with MPlayer makes the audio sound
right, but it's waaaaay out of sync -- by several seconds.

In any case, at first looks, it appears that mp1e still does a better
job in CPU_usage:quality than Nuppel.  Does this sound about right?
