You probably want something like vidcat - a simple but working tool. It
is part of something bigger, but I forgot what it is. Maybe here:

If you search Google you will find plenty of v4l software, and most of
it will be simple. If you look at complex software (xawtv etc.) then it
will be more difficult to understand how it works.

The fullest of all full documentations is in
linux/Documentation/video4linux/ directory on your computer.

If it is not full enough ... well, too bad. There were few magazine
articles that described v4l a little bit better, but not much better.
Fortunately, v4l is not too complex, and after you get it you don't
really need more than a printed header file as a reference.
