Thanks to contributions all round, the problem with my TV card is mostly resolved. Apparently, if the card is initialized with v4lctl manually before running the TV app, everything turns out fine. Otherwise, the whole machine locks up. (Tested with 2.4.19-pre5 and xawtv 3.72.) Looks like a timing issue to me, perhaps somebody should look into it.
