v4l bttv Newbee confusion

Ok I just got me an AverMedia Tv Series Framegrabber

it has a Bt 878 and a tuner and on the PCI board
There is a sticker on the tuner with the following checkboxes:
N
N-j
P-N
P-M
PBG
PDK
PI
SDK
BG + DK
SL

N is the only one checked !

it also has 74HC4052 (logic?)
one PIC16C54A (MC?)
one 24LC02B (Serial EEPROM)
and whatever is inside the tuner case ok thats a TDA9800T a SA5523 and a TBA5737M all from Philips

I was greping around for bttv on my system
and its nice the installation allrady put it in for me and recognised the BT chip (/var/log/messages)
I installed xawtv

All runs without apparent error messages ...
However for one the noise that xawtv shows me is repetetive and not all of the screen really changes when I am flipping around the
channels
And the blue in the composite setting is pure and static (even though I had verified that the attached ntsc cmos Cam works fine from
Windos) the use of this cam (or better a CCD version) is the whole reason for me doing this investigation !

I figure it must be because one of the readme files (kerneldoc/v4l/bttv/INSTALL) says I have to edit a Makefile and put a 6 in there
for Avermedia ? (I looked at that file in the 'drivers' Subfolder of my kernel and found no indication what they may be talking
about ...)
I cant believe thats how its supposed to be done why not use conf.modules ???

right now it only mentions
alias char-major-81 bttv

Sorry i havent found any better documentation :(
what I have is the stuff that apparently came with my 2.2.15 kernel original from the Mandrake 7.1 install
and also what came with xawtv

And right now as I am typing the LAN is down

I think I am missing some simple point here by not having a clue where to start reading those docs or having some outdated ones ???

Any hints ?

Thanks

Tobias
