Thankfully for me, I'm not suffering *that* problem.  As detailed elsewhere,
setting pll=1 or card=3 to my bttv solved the issue.

I'm not using V4L at all.  I'm using bttv 0.7.106, kernel 2.4.20 (gentoo
patches).
