Hard lockup with xawtv -triggered by heavy disk I/O

Hi

I'm having complete system lockup after few minutes using xawtv and doing some bacground I/O like md5sum /home/user/*. No oopses, nothing in logs, sysrq combo doesn't work, only hard reset helps. Tvtime app works ok but it doesnt use overlay and burns 50% on my 1.3ghz tbird. I have pinnacle pctv rave tuner, geforce 2mx and msi-kt266pro2 mb with 768M ram.
I have tried few different kernels from 2.4.22pre7 to 2.4.22rc2, different nvidia drivers, bttv 0.7.x and 0.9.x but nothing helps. I've tried to trigger oops from system console with no luck but minutes after I switch back to X -> lockup.
I will try removing all pci cards except tuner from my system to eliminate possible hardware clashes.
I'd sure like to know if this is kernel problem or faulty hardware. If someone has any ideas how to debug this please share.
regards
