8 bit color depth?

My machine has only 1MB video memory (at least I think, anyone
know how to get the machine to report the amount?).

As it is now, I'm stuck with my display color depth of 8 bits
because of this.

Does this pose any limitation to the color depth of the images
I want to grab from my videum capture card? I would think not,
and that I could just serve these images or streams to another
PC on my network that has a better video card.

However when running v4l-conf, it wants to get my color depth
from the current display (:0.0) and that is 8bits. There's
a frame-buffer argument, but I don't really understand it. I
think it requires that I have a different display (framebuffer?)
in my XF86Config file.

Ideas?
Thanks,
Joe
