Re: Video capture devices

Hi

I would stay away from ATI boards.

I have an ATI AIW 8500 DV and there is NO V4L or V4L2 support.

As of RH 8.0 the card will detect the Radeon Chipset and the FireWire ports so the card at least works. However the live video display, capture and single shot capture still are not supported. Using software form the GATOS project it is possible to view live video using the Xv extensions in X, but there is still no capture support at all.

From what I have seen in the list, the Hauppauge cards are the best supported with regular retail availability.

I had an ATI AIW Rage 128, and using programs from the GATOS project it worked
well but I could never figure out how to capture live video with it under linux.

Hi,

I am interested in replacing my soon to be dead VCR with some sort of
PVR based on a Linux box I already have in my entertainment center for
playing MP3s. My questions are:

Which video capture board works best with Linux?

Which vendor either supplies drivers and or software or at least makes
the specs available for other developers?

These seem like the might be pretty common questions, is there an FAQ
somewhere for this info?

From a little searching on the net it looks like my options are a DC10+
based board from Pinnacle, a WinTV board from Hauppauge, some Matrox
products, are there any others?

Thanks
Rick
