Capture problems

Hi,

I am trying to get video capture working on an 878 based board with a VIA EPIA motherboard, VIA C3-800 CPU.

xawtv always works for me. streamer works, but only captures up to 15fps - I need 25. I can successfully install vcr 1.09 with avifile0.6. However, on Mandrake 8.1 and 8.2, and Redhat 7.2, executing vcr causes the PC to reboot. I have tried with the kernels that come with these distros, as well as 2.4.19. I have tried upgrading bttv to 0.7.65, and to 0.8.44 with videodevX 20020330. One time I got vcr to actually capture, but it hung the machine on quitting.

I also tried zapping, but it will not start (says I have no mmx?). If anyone can help me at all, or give me any suggestions of other capture programs to try, I would really appreciate it. Meanwhile, I am probably going to have to look at what is making streamer so slow, and try to fix it (ugh).
