can't beat this wintv card into submission

Hello,

I recently picked up a Hauppauge WinTV card (bt878, phillips NTSC tuner),
and I just can't seem to get the darn thing working.

Running a 2.4.5 kernel. To start with, I just tried loading the bttv
module with
modpobe bttv card=10 tuner=2
and yet if I crank up XawTV, I just get a mostly black screen with a bar
of static at the top, and static from the audio (external audio jack to
sound card line in)

I tried using find_tvcardoptions.sh (found it on freshmeat), which tries
all the different combinations of tuner and pll options, and I didn't see
any noticable changes the whole time it was trying combinations.

I've got XawTV configured for NTSC, Television, us-cable. I've also
tried using bttvgrab to grab frames, but they just come up black.

Am I messing up something with the modules, or is this a userspace
app problem?

here's the syslog output from when I run modprobe bttv card=10 tuner=2
