Oh boy, this is getting offtopic but here we go:

What u mean no mouse? record dont use mouse. I use it with keyboard.

I use ESS 1688 (nice cheap board BTW)

About recording apps, U can use the following:

Try this poorman's oscilloscope:

cat /dev/audio

Then if u see what looks like a perl program been spit out , then your card is
converting analog sound to digital signal.
Try running aumix at same time to see if u can change the "picture", by
adjusting the levels.

Now is time to record this digital signal. Use sox, a
rocket-science-cientist-friendly program:

sox -tossdsp /dev/dsp  tst.wav

Now play it:

play tst.wav

If u can hear the nice sound , U are in business.
If not, there is some thing wrong with your sound card. 
Try another card, check your cables, irq, dma , /var/log/messages etc.
