See Sound-FAQ for what gpio does.  And pick up something newer than 0.7.28
first, the FAQ has been updated recently.

I'd expect pll makes a difference.  Might be some other chip which is connected
to the gpio pins too.  Most cards have just some audio mux chip connected to the
gpio pins.
