In addition, square pixel seems to be suitable for computer-only use
such as quicktime movies whereas CCIR601 is used for authoring DVD's.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm somewhat new to this and trying to
digest information from multiple sources deemed reliable.

I am looking at the specs for the BT878. If I'm reading them
correctly, you also have the choice of 720x576 without scaling in
PAL. This depends on whether you're capturing for PAL square pixel at
768x576 or CCIR601 at 720x576.
For NTSC, the numbers would appear to be 640x480 for square pixel and
720x480 for CCIR601 without any horizontal scaling.
By the way, the specifications for the BT878 can be downloaded from
http://www.conexant.com/products/entry.jsp?id=272. The document I'm
looking at is "*100600B.pdf

Perhaps, I'll start trying to comprehend Gerd's work. I have a couple
weeks off here before classes resume. Gerd, how should I start?
