Hello people, Today I have bought a TV-card because I was under the impression that it can work with RedHat 9. The card is sold by Aldi here in the Netherlands, and I guess in Belgium and Germany too. So, lots of people in this part of the world may have seen it. It's boxed by Medion, the card itself has Avermedia printed on it. It has a Philips 7134 chipset, and it should be able to do TV, teletext, FM radio. My plan is to use all those features :) I was reluctant to begin recompiling kernels etc. because I am really not a developer and makefiles just scare me. Seriously. So after some reading and searching I was glad to find <http://atrpms.physik.fu-berlin.de/dist/rh9/saa7134/>. I have installed the packages saa7134-kmdl-2.4.20-20_29.rh9.at-0.2.8-10.rh9.at [kernel?] and saa7134-0.2.8-10.rh9.at [device?] as per synaptic. I also upgraded xawtv to version 3.88-0.8 and I installed the tvtime application. This seemed to have helped only to the point that I can now run xawtv, but it still all it gives me is a black output window. After booting with the new kernel I get the following when I type xawtv: [olav@box olav]$ xawtv This is xawtv-3.88, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.20-20_29.rh9.at) can't open /dev/video0: No such device v4l2: open /dev/video0: Onbekend apparaat v4l2: open /dev/video0: Onbekend apparaat v4l: open /dev/video0: Onbekend apparaat no video grabber device available "Onbekend apparaat" should be "Unknown device" in English, I guess. These are the the same messages I got before I installed the packages from atrmps. When I try tvtime in this situation, it will give me a blue window and say that it can't find /dev/video. After I do modprobe saa7134 (didn't make that up myself, read it somewhere) xawtv will now run, but with only black screen like I mentioned. After I exit the program it gives me another message: [olav@box olav]$ xawtv This is xawtv-3.88, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.20-20_29.rh9.at) v4l2: read: Invoer-/uitvoerfout "Invooer-/uitvoerfout" should be "input/output error". Tvtime starts with a black window (after the modprobe, still) now, but it just dies within a second or so - window gone. What is happening here? I believe I have made some progress, because things are happening now that were not happening before I installed the 1734 stuff from atrpms. But I can't figure out how to proceed now, what should I do next to finally get my favourite weather reporter (she's cute :)) on my computer screen? I am willing to learn a few new things about kernels and all the technical stuff, up to a point. But what I could use above all is some strong hints, perhaps even a sort of step-by-step HOWTO-like instruction. Does it exist on the web? Can anyone give me some direction here? Thank you for reading, Olav.
