Here in Europe at least, the boxes are *exactly* identical between the
878-based and 88x-based boards (Including the assertion that Linux
drivers are available via the Hauppauge website, so as a last resort if
you're sicced with a 88x you can probably get your money back). The only
way to know the chipset is to open the box and read the label on the
largest IC.
After we had that trouble with Hauppauge we switched to Pinnacle, and
now they're changing the tuner on us...
