These programs use the xvideo feature of X server. If you start the
xawtv with -noxv parameter you get some result like up. When you use the
xvideo you cant capcturing, beceuse this only copy the "captured" data
to video memory. Theoriticaly the km make pipeline betwen the xvideo and
the kernel space v4l. If you start xawtv and select some chanel, then
load the km modules, you will get a new v4l type interface aka
/dev/video0. If you lucky, you can record from it. But you cant change
chanel, etc over this interface.

Best way if you buy a cheap pctv card, this will work perfectly, without
any black magic. (blood of virgin at full moon, etc)
