We have tested it successfully, on a debian-3 (woody), with updated
drivers. Quoting a colleague of mine:
For BT878 : Hercules Smart TV (Stereo and No stereo)
Get latest bttv drivers at http://bytesex.org/bttv/ (bttv-0.7.106
is OK)
install driver :
cd /usr/src
tar -xzf bttv-0.7.106.tar.gz
cd bttv-0.7.106
make
make install
Add following in /etc/modules :
bttv card=100
!!! : card number could depend on the driver release
get card number with card numer list : make -s -C driver
list
And finally (debian only ?) : /etc/init.d/modutils to start the
driver, or reboot..
See if OK with :
xawtv -hwscan

We had the same unpleasant surprise. It is particularly risky to buy
now, because the boxes are *exactly* identical, including a URL for
drivers - for the BT878 of course. And Hauppauge customer support has
been rather uncooperative.

This frightens me. We have a number of PCTV-Rave, to go in production
systems soon. We will have to test them *all* ASAP! But *one* at least
is already working, including sound. What is the precise model number
that gives you trouble? Not on the box (see WinTV above!) but the model
numbers on the major circuits on the board, esp. the tuner?

It seems purchasing a TV card is the coming casino game. You can *never*
be sure a model will work, even supposedly identical to a card you
yourself already have working!
Have a nice day,
