well, I was running an older version of bttv, and since language-switching in xawtv didn't work, I decided to give the new version a go .. downloaded the newest patch and bttv-0.7.106 ... applied the patch, rebuilt kernel, even rebooted (some other reasons except bttv update), built modules and everything, compiled bttv, installed, wanted to start xawtv, and what do I have to see? config: invalid value for input: svideo so I run v4lctl list, which gives the following output: eye@lormoral eye $ v4lctl list config: invalid value for input: svideo valid choices for "input": "Television", "Composite1", "Composite2" attribute | type | current | default | comment -----------+--------+---------+---------+------------------------------------- input | choice | (null) | Televis | Television Composite1 Composite2 mute | bool | on | off | audio mode | choice | stereo | auto | auto mono stereo lang1 lang2 volume | int | 65535 | 0 | range is 0 => 65535 norm | choice | PAL | PAL | PAL NTSC SECAM PAL-NC PAL-M PAL-N NTSC-JP bright | int | 32768 | 0 | range is 0 => 65535 hue | int | 32768 | 0 | range is 0 => 65535 color | int | 51118 | 0 | range is 0 => 65535 contrast | int | 29492 | 0 | range is 0 => 65535 but this is utter bullshit, the card has an svideo-input, it has worked so far, and this has happened before and I mentioned this bug here and somebody told me it was fixed? this is a new version of bttv and still has this bug? anyway .. so I decide I'll try with 0.9.7 ... I download the v4l2 driver and bttv-0.9.7, follow every step in the online manual .. I compile, I rmmod the 0.7.106 driver and modprobe the 0.9.7 one .. now I get the same error .. so 0.9.7 also thinks I don't have an svideo-input, even though I do have one and it has worked in previous versions .. so I rmmod that too and downgrade to 0.9.4 .. (i.e. I change to the directory which contained the sources of 0.9.4, make clean; make; make install, rmmod the old drivers and modprobe the new ones) .. now, running v4lctl list gives the following output: eye@lormoral eye $ v4lctl list attribute | type | current | default | comment -----------+--------+---------+---------+------------------------------------- norm | choice | (null) | PAL | PAL NTSC SECAM PAL-Nc PAL-M PAL-N NTSC-JP input | choice | Televis | Televis | Television Composite1 S-Video audio mode | choice | mono | mono | mono stereo lang1 lang2 bright | int | 32768 | 32768 | range is 0 => 65535 contrast | int | 32768 | 32768 | range is 0 => 65535 color | int | 32768 | 32768 | range is 0 => 65535 hue | int | 32768 | 32768 | range is 0 => 65535 volume | int | 65535 | 65535 | range is 0 => 65535 Bass | int | 32768 | 32768 | range is 0 => 65535 Treble | int | 32768 | 32768 | range is 0 => 65535 mute | bool | off | off | chroma agc | bool | off | off | combfilter | bool | off | off | automute | bool | on | off | luma decim | bool | off | off | agc crush | bool | on | off | so all of a sudden, svideo is present again, only now it's called S-Video ... *scratches head* .. but anyway, I won't complain, just so long as I got my DVD-watching-capability back .. so I start xawtv (updated to 3.86 in the meantime). But even though v4lctl list tells me I do have S-Video, xawtv complains about the entry in .xawtv: eye@lormoral eye $ xawtv ORF1 config: invalid value for input: S-Video valid choices for "input": "television", "composite1", "composite2" note: this does _not_ reflect the values that v4lctl list returns .. so now what? by now I have almost given up about the language-switching-capability (i.e. stereo/mono/lang1/lang2) .. I guess it will never work with the Pinnacle card since only Hauppauge cards seem to get the full focus here .. but why do I _lose_ important capabilities of my card when I _upgrade_? this doesn't make sense! so while I'm freaking out here in front of my keyboard I decide to try one last thing and start xawtv not with capture = over but with capture = grab and -noxv on the commandline .. and BINGO, S-Video is back .. uh .. could this be cleaned up, please? plus, the newest versions (0.7.106 and 0.9.7) _do_ lose the S-Video input for Pinnacle PCTV Pro. Right now I can only make it work in 0.9.4 ... -- Michael Hellwig aka The Eye olymp.idle.at admin check out http://homepage.uibk.ac.at/~csaa5128 for gpg public key and don't hesitate to look at http://laerm.or.at
