difference in behaviour of modprobe and insmode

Hello,

I am working on btfg Linux device
driver porting for the Brooktree Bt848 family of video
decoder chips on kernel 2.4.19. I have a test program
which when run after I have loaded driver module using
command "insmod btfg.o" gives error
ioctl failed(FGRABGCARDTYPE) : No such device.

Whereas if I load the driver using command "modprobe
btfg" gives error
icotl failed(FGRABGCARDTYPE) : invalid argument.

Can anyone suggest where the problem can be ??

Thanks,
Neelu.
